Canute's plastic Army

https://www.facebook.com/canutesplasticarmy/

https://soundcloud.com/canutes-plastic-army

Canute’s Plastic Army is an acoustic duo consisting of Anish Harrison’s vocals (prev. of the Teddy White Band) and Neil Mercer on guitar (prev. of Rumour Shed and the Dacoits).

The band began as a solo project of Neil, who started playing and writing on his own due to depleting band mates. In 2016 Anish and Neil discovered a shared love of dark, twisted songs by artists as disparate as Odetta, Cate Le Bon and Pulp. Anish’s soaring vocals and Neil’s dynamic acoustic guitar was a potent mix. They quickly started writing dark and twisted songs of their own.

Breaking point

by Madam Renards. Written by Zoe Smith

https://madamrenards.wordpress.com/

It’s been a bad night, a really bad night. In fact, life in general is pretty bad for these two strangers. They wind up in A&E… then sat on bench, in the early hours, waiting. What they’re waiting for is a bit of a mystery. All that’s certain is the sun will rise and they will part ways. The question is: how much do you share with a stranger?

In Breaking Point two women take a one-night stand approach to the confessional, in a bid to wind up a little happier at the end of it all.

All American scream

by SWiNE

https://www.facebook.com/SWiNEzone/?fref=ts

Welcome to The Average Joe Show, a good ol’ fashioned daytime sitcom with zinging one-liners and loveable characters all working hard on that freedom freeway named the pursuit of happiness.
Except that recently the world has pursued a terrifying, globalising and memetic transformation into something very grey indeed.

Joe’s life goes off the rails in existential crisis when the show reaches its happy conclusion and all that is left is an ugly land filled with cybernetic post-humans and trump-like revisionists, that reveal the inherent absurdity of all he held dear.

All American Scream is a genre-bending and off kilter, mind-warping piece with a pitch black sense of humour; deploying radical 4th wall-breaking sensibilities and surrealist costume as well as experimental live music and offbeat dramatics to tell a thought provoking story about the state of the world today in a cultural-analytical fashion. It’s heaps of fun.

BP Strange Encounters

W&P Bad Idea

OFN Political, sassy

Describe you in one word

CPA Hot

CWC Caring

SW Quirky

DP Punny

W&P No

What is your show’s selling point / highlight?

CPA We can lick our own eyebrows

CWC Safe space for children to express themselves

SW I hope to give people a new skill which they can have fun with and try again at home in their kitchen..

DP It contains lots of gags, so if you don’t like one don’t worry there’ll be another half-a-dozen along any moment. In Edinburgh, Broadway Baby said it was “hilarious… a delight to watch… you’ll definitely enjoy this” **** (that’s four stars, they didn’t swear at the end)

BP I’ve taken quite a romantic idea of placing two strangers on a bench at midnight and instead of making it about romantic love I’ve made it about two lost souls impulsively confessing all – which in a way is a bigger gift than anything as we all need to feel understood and sometimes that comes from the least unexpected place.

AAS The way it examines contemporary states of being, and this relevance to us all, and the poo joke

W&P It could be a car-crash of epic proportions

OFN If you enjoy being entertained by the world news and TV shows like X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, ‘Only For Now’ is the show for you. If you don’t, try picturing President Trump with a microphone and backing dancers - we hope we can change your mind.

What kind of audiences do you appeal to?

CPA Humans and marsupials

CWC Recommended age 5-12 year old

W&P People you wouldn’t have expected, actually

OFN Teens to Grannies!

If your show was a doughnut, what flavour would it be?

CPA Crème Brulee with a splash of Papa Lazaru

CWC Jam

SW Organic and vegan with lots of dark chocolate!

DP Custard

BP Raspberry jam but one of those ones were you think it’s empty because the jam’s been piped in all on one side so when you get to it it spurts everywhere!

AAS Avant-garde (and jam [but weird jam])

W&P Flesh

OFN A lemon meringue pie doughnut – soft and sweet on the surface but zingy in the centre

What is the weirdest feedback you’ve ever received?

SW Hm, I have had some quite funny feedback, but haven’t written it all down.. Various comments about spooning, and sore fingers and legs.. Had this the other day "I've got no sense of rhythm, I really wasn't looking forward to it.. But that was GREAT!"

DP A sort of loud pitched screeching noise when I once held the microphone too close to a speaker.

AAS “I’m breaking up with you. We are over. I’ll come by yours next week to collect all my stuff but after that I never want to hear from you again. Get rid of the poo joke.”

W&P ‘That sounded like the end of the world’

OFN “That’s great, maybe you could give him a feather boa?”

Who inspires your work?

CPA Many eclectic bands and artists, from Radiohead to Odetta, Fairport Convention to Jarvis Cocker

CWC The children!

SW All sorts of musicians, too many to name! But check out Abby the Spoon Lady and

DP As a kid I was a huge fan of Tommy Cooper and nowadays I love Tim Vine, Gary Delaney and Milton Jones.

BP This is for my sister!

AAS We are greatly inspired by the works of groundbreaking post-modernist writers and absurdist playwrights; as well as surrealists, Dadaists, conceptualists and philosophers; people like Beckett and Jorodowsky and Derrida and Kafka and David Foster-Wallace. But mostly we are inspired by what is happening; and by the idea of creating a vehicle that others can use to contextualize, explore, engage with and deal with what is happening – the idea that something can be timely, and timeless. We are inspired by a lot, not least poo jokes.

W&P The Kims Deal and Gordon

OFN Davina McCall, Hilary Clinton and Beyoncé

What does a regular day look like for you?

CPA Sparkly and wet

BP For me, as writer, it’s early days, and most days are me looking for more excuses to write! And counting down to the Swinge, of course.

AAS Very busy, fraught with drama, we are constantly at work on a wide range of projects

W&P A very large pot of tea surrounded by scissors, pritt-stick and cassette tapes

OFN A vocal warm up followed by lots of laughter!

If you weren't a performer, what would you be?

CPA A librarian and a teacher, because that’s our real day-jobs

DP A lumberjack

W&P A caterpillar

Who would you be most excited to see on the front row of your audience?

CWC Lots of children with sparkling eyes!!

SW One of my old teachers from Lawns or Churchfields!!

DP Lord Lucan

AAS My father. I like to think he’ll be looking up from the burning depths of hell at our performance. Burn in hell dad.

W&P Myself, travelling back in time from the future to warn me of a terrible disaster that I can prevent if we act very, very quickly..

OFN Our main man Barack Obama and our Mums

"I would be happy if my performance at the Swinge..."

CPA ...made us millionaires

CWC ...inspired all children to play more and more and more!

SW ...inspired lots of people to make music in their kitchen. ;)

DP …was a massive success and led to a huge TV deal, fame and fortune. Or alternatively, if a load of people turned up, laughed for 55 minutes and then went home happier than when they arrived.

BP ...made just one person say – everyone needs to see this.

AAS SWiNE are a multi-disciplinary art collective that endeavour to create enriching, progressive debate and action through carefully crafted experiences. Our play ‘All American Scream’, a multi-layered exploration of contemporary existence – complete with jokes about poo.

W&P ...results in the complete dismantling of patriarchal hegemonic capitalism

OFN …made people think, dance and laugh...rocked…didn’t end in a ball of flames
